Recession bargains at New York’s best restaurants
Some of Manhattan’s best restaurants are fighting the recession with affordable prix fixe menus.
When I lived in New York, I perfected “the art of dining frugally in pricey restaurants,” said Susan Spano in the Los Angeles Times. With the recession causing havoc among Manhattan’s financial elite, dining meccas whose prices are usually sky-high “have fought back by offering affordable prix fixe menus and perks to keep their tables full.” Here are some of the delicious deals I found on a recent trip.
Daniel 60 E. 65th St., (212) 288-0033. “One of the top Michelin-starred spots for eating French here,” Daniel Boulud’s eponymous restaurant “offers a $98 three-course early dinner menu (5:30–6:30 p.m.) that includes specially selected wines.”
Jean Georges 1 Central Park West, (212) 299-3900. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has restaurants all over New York City. Right now his flagship “offers a $24 lunch menu and a $35 early and late dinner.”

The Modern 9 W. 53rd St., (212) 333-1220. This “elegant showcase for Alsatian chef Gabriel Kreuther” looks out onto the sculpture garden of the Museum of Modern Art. “On weekdays until 6:30 p.m. he offers a four-course prix fixe menu for $65.”
‘21’ 21 W. 52nd St., (212) 582-7200. “The famous former speak-easy” offers a $24 lunch special and a $35 three-course prix fixe dinner.
