Venetian value, Afterlife activism
Good day for pulling up bootstraps, Bad day for healthy interests
GOOD DAY FOR: Pulling up bootstraps, as some waterlogged Venice hotels are offering “High Water” packages to lure tourists to the flooded city. For about $250, you get one night’s stay, a map of less-soggy pedestrian routes, and “free use of rubber boots.” Sea levels in the Adriatic rose 61 inches in the first days of December, to the highest level since 1968 and the fourth-highest mark in a century. BAD DAY FOR: Healthy interests, after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) began offering a line of branded coffins for animal lovers. The all-natural wood coffins, made by an artisan in New Mexico, run for about $650, including a $75 donation to PETA, and sport slogans such as “Lifetime PETA Member” and “Told You I Wouldn’t Be Caught Dead in Fur!” “”We expect a healthy interest,” said PETA spokesman Michael McGraw.
