Good day, Bad day

Racing downhill, Silvio Berlusconi

GOOD DAY FOR: Racing downhill, as Nascar sponsors are hitting the breaks on advertising at the No. 2 U.S. sport by TV viewership. With GE, Chrysler, Sears, Chevron, and other sponsors sitting out this round, Nascar is having trouble finding enough cars to race. Dario Franchitti, winner of the 2007 Indy 500, was forced out this year due to a dearth of firms willing to sponsor his cars. (Bloomberg)

BAD DAY FOR: Silvio Berlusconi, as the Italian prime minister and media magnate has lost more than $2 billion, or about a quarter of his wealth, in the financial meltdown. Italy’s stock market, one of the worst hit, has shed 38 percent this year; Berlusconi’s Mediaset has lost 34 percent since May. (Variety)
