Supreme Court health scare
The week's news at a glance.
Hupper Island, Maine
Chief Justice John Roberts suffered a seizure this week, sustaining cuts and scrapes when he passed out and fell onto a wooden dock. Roberts, 52, was vacationing with his family on a small island in Maine’s Penobscot Bay when he collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital in nearby Rockport and was released the next day, after doctors declared him “fully recovered.” The hospital described the episode as a “mild idiopathic seizure,” meaning its cause was unknown. Roberts suffered a similar seizure in 1993. Because he has now experienced two such episodes, Roberts meets the criteria for epilepsy, and medical experts suggested he may need medication to control his seizures. Such medication can have serious side effects, including lethargy, irritability, and memory loss.
