Figueira da Foz, Portugal
Portuguese police this week said they captured “El Solitario,” Spain’s most-wanted bank robber, as he was planning a heist in Portugal. Jaime Gimenez Arce, 56, is accused of robbing at least 30 banks across Spain, for a total haul of more than $800,000 since 1993. His method was always the same. Wearing a wig and a fake beard, he would brandish a gun at a teller and take all the money in the till, then flee. Police said they caught Arce staking out a bank while wearing his trademark disguise. “We’re very pleased,” said Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Rubalcaba. “He’s the most wanted criminal in Spain, a very cruel criminal.” Arce is also accused of killing three police officers.
