University president is fired

The president of Eastern Michigan University was fired this week, several months after he was first accused of lying about the rape and murder of a student. The body of 22-year-old Laura Dickinson was found on her dorm room floor Dec. 15, and for weeks afterward, university president John Fallon and other school officials insisted there were no signs of foul play. It wasn’t until February, when another student was charged with rape and murder in the case, that the truth came out. An independent review determined earlier this month that crime evidence had emerged almost immediately, but that Fallon was trying to protect the school’s image. The 23,500-student university’s security chief and vice president of university affairs were also dismissed.
