Arming Iran
The week's news at a glance.
Moscow
Russia sent anti-aircraft missiles to Iran this week, in defiance of a U.S. request to stop all weapons sales to the Islamic theocracy. The U.N. Security Council, where both Russia and the U.S. wield vetoes, is stalemated over which sanctions to impose on Iran for continuing its uranium enrichment program. Russia agrees that Iran should stop enrichment, but it supports Iran’s pursuit of nuclear power in general and has been helping the country build its first reactor. “Iran is not under sanctions,” said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov. “If it wants to buy defensive equipment for its armed forces, then why not?” The U.S. and its allies believe Iran’s nuclear program is intended to make bombs.
