Murder suspect speaks

Phoenix
One of two men suspected of seven murders in the Phoenix area asserted his innocence at a jailhouse news conference this week. Airport custodian Dale Hausner, 33, spoke to reporters after he and his roommate, Samuel Dieteman, 30, were booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Hausner admitted he owned several weapons, “as do most Americans.” His roommate may have used them, Hausner said, although “I never saw him as a full-blooded killer.” Dieteman did not attend the press conference, which ended abruptly when Hausner’s court-appointed lawyer appeared and advised his client not to speak. In addition to seven murders, Hausner and Dieteman are suspects in as many as 37 other shootings of people and pets.
