Crew Rescued
The week's news at a glance.
Aleutian Islands, Alaska
All 23 members of the crew of a Singapore-registered freighter were rescued this week, after their 650-foot ship turned on its side off the Alaskan coast and started taking on water and leaking fuel. The Cougar Ace, heading from Japan to Vancouver and carrying 4,800 cars, sent a distress call after it started to list in heavy seas. The Coast Guard and the Alaska Air National Guard responded, using helicopters to hoist crew members to safety. The Coast Guard is now scrambling to contain a two-mile-long slick formed by fuel oil and diesel fuel that leaked from the ship.
