Bangkok
Royalty from around the globe partied with Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej this week to celebrate his 60th year on the throne. Guests included Japan’s Emperor Akihito, Spain’s Queen Sofia, Britain’s Prince Andrew, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. The Thai king is revered as a god in his homeland. Across Thailand, people wore bright yellow, the color of the monarchy, and in Bangkok, hundreds of thousands thronged the palace for a glimpse of the king. Bhumibol, 78, is the world’s longest-reigning monarch. He was born in the U.S., where his father, then a prince, was in medical school.
