New England soaked
The week's news at a glance.
Methuen, Mass.
Five consecutive days of rain produced the worst flooding in New England in at least 70 years. The governors of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire declared emergencies, as heavy rainfall overwhelmed roads, dams, and wastewater facilities. “We’re under siege—water is coming out everywhere,” said Frederick Laskey of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. In Methuen, hundreds of residents were evacuated after floodwaters weakened the Spricket River Dam. No flood-related fatalities were reported, but the Coast Guard was searching for two people seen floating down the Merrimack River at the height of the downpour.
