Miners rescued
The week's news at a glance.
Tasmania
Two Tasmanian gold miners were rescued this week after being trapped underground by a rock fall for 14 days. Todd Russell and Brant Webb were squeezed together in a small wire cage for two weeks, but escaped from their ordeal largely uninjured. Rescuers were able to extend a small plastic pipe down to the men, supplying them with food and water, along with iPods to keep their spirits up. An international team had to drill 45 feet through solid rock to reach them. A third miner was killed in the initial cave-in.
