Sudan gets dissed
The week's news at a glance.
Khartoum, Sudan
Ten of the 22 heads of state in the Arab League skipped the annual summit this week, in a snub of this year’s host country, Sudan. The U.S. had asked Arab allies to stay away as a show of disapproval of the Sudanese government, which has been resisting U.N. attempts to deploy peacekeepers to its war-torn Darfur region. Among the absent were two of the Arab world’s most influential leaders, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Saudi King Abdullah. The summit did not reach an agreement on what to do about Darfur. Instead, the League repeated its usual call for Israel to withdraw immediately from the occupied territories.
