Premier under pressure
The week's news at a glance.
Bangkok
Nearly 100,000 people marched through Bangkok this week, demanding that the Thai prime minister resign over a controversial business deal. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the major shareholder in the national satellite network, sold the company in January to a Singaporean company, netting himself nearly $2 billion, tax-free. After a public outcry, Thaksin last month called for new elections April 2. But opposition parties are refusing to participate and say he should simply resign. They pledge to hold daily rallies until he does so.
