Faking gayness
The week's news at a glance.
London
Heterosexual foreigners can contract sham gay unions to gain British citizenship, the London Sunday Times reported this week. Undercover reporters posing as would-be immigrants said that six different law firms told them how to exploit a loophole in the law legalizing civil partnerships. Like married couples, gay partners can get citizenship after two years in Britain. But the married couple must consummate the relationship, while the gay couple need not prove they even live together. Civil partnership was legalized only last December, and it’s unclear how many ceremonies involving foreigners have been bogus. But more may be coming: The Times article has already received lots of attention in Pakistani and Indian newspapers.
