Bita Genet, Ethiopia
Three lions rescued a young girl from men who were trying to force her into a marriage, Ethiopian police said this week. The girl, age 12, was abducted and had been beaten by several men for seven days before the lions came and drove off her captors. “They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,” Sgt. Wondimu Wedajo said. Wildlife experts said the girl’s cries probably sounded like those of a wounded lion cub, inspiring the animals to help her.
