Bolton on hold
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Senate Democrats last week temporarily blocked a vote on whether to confirm John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Democrats said they had launched a filibuster to stave off a final vote on Bolton, a fierce critic of the U.N., to pressure the White House into releasing documents on whether Bolton had ever mishandled classified information. The move came three days after a bipartisan group of 14 senators overcame partisan bickering to end a showdown over judicial nominees, dousing talk of a new era of cooperation on Capitol Hill. “The honeymoon is over,” said Sen. George Allen, a Virginia Republican.
