Tony Blair kicked off a campaign this week for a third term as British prime minister, unprecedented for his Labor Party. The last person to win a third term was Conservative Margaret Thatcher, whose premiership from 1979 to 1990 was the longest in more than 150 years. Blair has faced heavy criticism over his contention that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Still, with a month to go before the elections, scheduled for May 5, polls show Blair’s Labor Party leading with 39 percent support, compared with 34 percent for the Conservative Party. The Liberal Democrats, the only major party to oppose the war in Iraq, are polling 21 percent.
