Ferry disaster
The week's news at a glance.
Dhaka, Bangladesh
At least 150 people died in Bangladesh this week when a river ferry capsized in a storm. The boat was traveling from the capital, Dhaka, to the town of Chandpu, and was believed to be carrying around 200 people heading home for the Muslim holiday of Ashura. Fatal ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh. There are few decent roads, and most people get around on old, overcrowded boats that traverse a large network of rivers and canals.
