Aborted takeoff
The week's news at a glance.
Teterboro, N.J.
A corporate jet taking off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey skidded off the runway at 175 mph last week, the latest in a string of crashes that have raised questions about the safety of high-end business aircraft. The jet zoomed across six lanes of traffic, peeling the roof off of a Toyota, before slamming into a warehouse. No one was killed, but 20 people were injured. Federal regulators and business aviation groups had already planned to meet this month to discuss safety, after several high-profile crashes. One downed plane was on its way to pick up former president George Bush; another was carrying members of a NASCAR racing team.
