Gay TV
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
France launched its first gay cable channel this week, with a huge outdoor party and virtually no protests. PinkTV will air original French shows with gay themes, including talk shows and newsmagazines. But since there’s very little such original programming yet, it will rely heavily on dubbed versions of “gay shows” such as the U.S.’s Queer as Folk and the British series Tipping the Velvet. It will also air old series considered to be “gay icon” programs, including Wonder Woman and Absolutely Fabulous. Posters advertising the new channel used a famous photograph of late French president François Mitterrand and former German chancellor Helmut Kohl walking hand in hand.
