Mexico City
Mexico and Peru pulled their ambassadors from Havana last week after Cuban leader Fidel Castro called the countries stooges of the United States. Castro lashed out after Mexico, Peru, and several other once-friendly governments voted for a United Nations resolution condemning Cuba’s human-rights record. Mexico’s prestige as an independent nation “turned into ashes” when it sided with the U.S. against Cuba, Castro said. Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez called the remarks “insulting.”
