American peacekeepers shot
The week's news at a glance.
Mitrovica, Kosovo
Two American policewomen serving with the U.N. mission in Kosovo were killed this week in an attack by a renegade Jordanian policeman. Ten other Americans were wounded in the incident, one critically. The Jordanian, who was part of a five-man contingent guarding a jail, fired on a group of correctional officers from the U.S., Austria, and Turkey as they were leaving their first training program. He was killed in the ensuing gun battle. Local news reports said the man had been upset over U.S. policy in Iraq, though the U.N. said those reports could not be confirmed. The U.S. and Jordan have each contributed more than 400 officers to the 3,500-member international police force in Kosovo.
