Longer-range missiles
The week's news at a glance.
Tehran
Iran’s air force now has ballistic missiles that are capable of reaching Israel and big enough to carry a nuclear warhead. At a ceremony this week marking the deployment of the new missiles, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the Iranian army “a divine force” that could fight the enemies of “the Lebanese and the Palestinian people”—a reference to Israel. He also railed against the U.S., saying, “The Islamic revolution has stamped the expiry date on the forehead of the imperialistic and nihilistic government of America.” Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking to E.U. ministers in Brussels, said Iran’s new capabilities were a threat to “the stability not only of the region but of the entire world.” The U.N. atomic agency and many Western governments believe that Iran is trying to develop nuclear warheads.
