The Roman Catholic bishop of Phoenix, Thomas O’Brien, was arrested this week in connection with a deadly hit-and-run accident. O’Brien was driving home from Mass when he and another driver allegedly hit a jaywalker. The pedestrian—Jim Reed, a 43-year-old father of two—died. Neither driver stopped. A witness got part of a license number, and police traced it to O’Brien. Officers found his tan Buick Park Avenue sedan in his garage. The passenger-side fender was dented, and the windshield was shattered. “The bishop is being booked for leaving the scene,” a police sergeant said. O’Brien thought he had hit an animal, court documents said. The bishop recently cut a deal with prosecutors who are investigating the church’s sexual-abuse scandals, after admitting that he simply reassigned priests accused of sexual molestation to other parishes.
