Ethiopia could run out of food by June, the prime minister said this week. Menes Zenawi called on donor nations to give food in the short term and practice free trade in the long term. “There is quite a bit of hypocrisy by the West,” Zenawi said. African farming, he said, will never be successful until it is globally competitive—and that won’t happen as long as Western farmers get government subsidies.
