Americans captured
The week's news at a glance.
Florencia, Colombia
A small U.S. airplane on an intelligence mission crash-landed in southern Colombia last week. A Colombian soldier and an American were found dead in the wreckage. Both had been shot at close range, a Colombian general said, “executed in an act of extreme cruelty.” Three other Americans were apparently captured by members of FARC, the country’s largest group of leftist rebels. “We have them! We have them!” a guerrilla fighter reportedly shouted in an intercepted radio transmission. The U.S. last month sent 70 Special Forces soldiers to train Colombian counterterrorist troops.
