70s radicals confess
The week's news at a glance.
Los Angeles
Four former members of the Symbionese Liberation Army pleaded guilty last week to killing a mother of four in a California bank robbery 27 years ago. Emily Montague, 55, wept as she apologized to the family of Myrna Opsahl, who was shot as she tried to deposit a church collection. “I just hope that by telling the truth it brings some relief to the family,” Montague said. A fifth suspect, James Kilgore, was captured in South Africa and awaits extradition hearings. The aging leftist radicals remade themselves while in hiding, obeying the law and raising families. In a plea bargain, all four face sentences ranging from six to eight years for second-degree murder. Stiffer penalties would serve no purpose, said Opsahl’s son, Jon. “There’s nothing we can do that will bring my mother back.”
