Dongting, China
Floods across Asia have left at least 1,800 dead in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Vietnam, and China. The region is at risk of even worse flooding before the summer ends. Dongting Lake in China, which usually absorbs spillover from the flood-prone Yangtze River, has already risen above its flood-warning mark. If the lake bursts its banks, China could be engulfed by its deadliest flood ever. Some 10 million people live and farm in the threatened plains.
