Zagreb, Croatia
Croatia got through its first-ever gay-pride march on Pride Day this week with no violence, a rarity in the Balkans. Several hundred people walked unmolested through Zagreb, calling for equality for gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. The head of the police, Interior Minister Sime Lucin, addressed the small crowd with the injunction “Love each other and fight for your rights.” It was a far cry from Serbia’s first pride march last year, when soccer hooligans and skinheads beat up the marchers while police looked placidly on.
