Good Day, Bad Day
Taxing smokers, riches for Queens
GOOD DAY FOR: Taxing smokers, as a study published today concludes that not taxing the $113 billion U.S. marijuana industry, plus enforcing anti-marijuana laws, costs U.S. taxpayers $41.8 billion a year. The study, by George Mason Ph.D. student Jon Gettman, estimates that 25 million Americans consume about 31 million pounds of pot annually. (Forbes.com)
BAD DAY FOR: Riches for Queens, as the New York Mets’ late-season collapse will cost the team as much as $15 million in postseason revenue. The team’s failure could also impact next season’s ticket and ad sales. With 17 games to go in regular season play, the Mets went from leading their division by seven games to losing even the Wild Card slot. (CNNMoney.com)
