1. MIKAEEL: POLICE DISCOVER BODY

Police investigating the disappearance of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular have discovered a body and arrested a person, believed to be his mother Rosie. The news was revealed at a 1am press conference. Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said: “I can confirm that we have recovered the body of a young boy in Fife before midnight.”

2. CAMERON MUST COME CLEAN SAYS CLEGG

David Cameron must come clean over government plans to build two new garden cities in the south of England, says deputy prime minister Nick Clegg. The Lib Dem leader tells the Daily Telegraph that Cameron should be “honest and upfront” over the plans for new cities in Kent and Buckinghamshire. Clegg also admits that the green belt is being “eaten away” by development.

3. PUTIN: GAYS SHOULD ‘LEAVE CHILDREN ALONE’

Vladimir Putin says gay people will not be harassed at the Winter Olympics provided they “leave the children in peace”. The president of the host nation said: "We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships. We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia." There are fines of up to £4,000 for anyone considered to be breaking the ban.

4. SUICIDE ATTACK ON KABUL RESTAURANT

A bomb attack on a restaurant in Kabul has killed 21 people, including a senior IMF official and four UN employees. The suicide attack, in Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan area, has been described by UN chief Ban Ki-moon as “horrific”. Lebanese, Canadians and a Briton were among the bomber’s 13 foreign victims. The other eight were Afghans.

5. WBA SPONSOR IN ANELKA ULTIMATUM

West Bromwich Albion’s shirt sponsor may cancel the deal over Nicolas Anelka’s quenelle goal celebration. Property website Zoopla has delivered an ultimatum to Albion stating it may pull of out the contract if Anelka plays against Everton on Monday night. The Frenchman is under investigation by the FA for a controversial goal celebration widely deemed anti-semitic.

6. MAGISTRATES NOW ‘LESS DIVERSE’

Public confidence in magistrates is declining as the industry becomes less diverse, says The Times. Magistracy, long considered the preserve of elderly, white, middle-class people, is becoming less representative, despite government efforts. A new report found that of the 22,377 serving magistrates, there are fewer young, working class and ethnic justices than 15 years ago.

7. POPE BENEDICT DEFROCKED 400 PRIESTS

Nearly 400 priests were defrocked over claims of child abuse during the tenure of Pope Benedict XVI, says the Vatican. The statistics, collected for a UN hearing on Thursday, show a dramatic increase in the measure during 2011 and 2012. Benedict, who became Pope in 2005, took the reins as the scandal of child sex abuse by priests was erupting.

8. RIO’S JESUS STATUE LOSES A THUMB

The iconic statue of Jesus Christ which overlooks Rio de Janeiro has lost a thumb after being struck by lightning. Christ the Redeemer, the city’s famous landmark, was damaged during a huge storm. There were more than 40,000 lightning flashes during the three-hour storm. Repairs on the 38-metre high statue will begin next month, says site caretaker Father Osmar Raposo.

9. MEN AND WOMEN’S REGRETS REVEALED

New research shows that 26% of British men wish they had better qualifications, while 20% of women wish they had eaten less and exercised more when they were younger. Asked what brings them most enjoyment, 45% of men said sex, with just 28% of women giving the same answer. The survey, in The Times, was conducted by an e-cigarette firm.

10. GUNNERS & CITY VIE FOR TOP SPOT

The battle for the top spot between Arsenal and Manchester City continues today as both sides face struggling opposition. The Gunners host 16th-placed Fulham, while Manchester City face Cardiff, who are in the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told the BBC he will never voluntarily leave the club. "I stay until they want me not to stay," he said.
