1. MILLER UNDER FIRE OVER ADVISER AUDIO

Culture secretary Maria Miller is under more pressure after the Daily Telegraph released a recording of a government adviser raising the Leveson Inquiry during a conversation with a journalist about Miller's expenses. During the conversation, the adviser said she wanted to “flag up” that Miller was involved in discussions over the future of press regulation.

2. ELECTION UNDERWAY IN AFGHANISTAN

An historic election is underway in Afghanistan as people vote for a new president in what will be the nation’s first ever transfer of power via the ballot box. Eight candidates are standing in the poll to find the successor for Hamid Karzai, who is banned constitutionally from seeking a third consecutive term. Huge security is in place.

3. PATIENTS AT RISK FROM 'OVERWORKED' DOCTORS

Overworked frontline doctors are looking after so many sick patients that they are missing vital signs of illness, says one of Britain’s most senior doctors. The president of the Royal College of Physicians said doctors are forced to run around wards “like a scalded cat” trying to look after up to 70 elderly patients at a time.

4. BABY BOY FACES MURDER CHARGE

A nine-month-old boy has appeared in a Pakistan court charged with attempted murder. Mohammad Musa Khan is accused of planning a murder, threatening police and interfering in state affairs. The baby, who is facing charges along with other members of his family, appeared in court clutching a bottle and sitting on his father’s lap.

5. UK ‘TO GAMBLE £250M’ ON GRAND NATIONAL

The maximum line-up of 40 runners is expected to race in the 167th Grand National at Aintree today. More than £250m is expected to be gambled on the race. Some UK bookmakers claim half the adult UK population will bet. Animal rights campaigners are calling on the public to boycott the race. Animal Aid says Aintree is the most dangerous of Britain’s racecourses.

6. HITLER MAY HAVE MARRIED A JEW

Was Adolf Hitler married to a Jew? That is the question being asked today after DNA analysis of hair found on a brush that belonged to Eva Braun seemed to show she had Jewish ancestry. She married the Fuhrer 40 hours before they committed suicide in his bunker. They had been a couple for 12 years. Many Jews in Germany converted to Catholicism in the 19th century.

7. BRITISH OIL WORKER SHOT DEAD IN BRAZIL

A British oil worker has been shot dead in Brazil during a suspected carjacking. Peter Campsie, 48, had been returning home from a business meeting when two men tried to steal his Lexus. Campsie, from Montrose in Scotland, tried to flee the moving vehicle but was shot twice.

8. FERGUSON TAKES HARVARD ROLE

Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a “long-term teaching position” at Harvard. The 72-year-old former Manchester United boss will lecture as part of a programme entitled ‘The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports’. Fergie, who gave a lecture on management at the university in 2012, said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity and privilege to contribute.”

9. BUSH PAINTINGS GO ON SHOW IN TEXAS

An exhibition of paintings by George W Bush is set to open in Texas. The former US president says he took up painting after leaving the White House because he is a “driven person”. The exhibition will feature portraits of world leaders including Tony Blair, Hamid Karzai and a grim-faced Vladimir Putin. Admission will cost $16 (£9.60).

10. CAN CITY & CHELSEA BOUNCE BACK?

Manchester City and Chelsea have the chance to make up ground on Liverpool today. City host Southampton in the midday kick-off, while Chelsea face Stoke in the tea-time tie. Victory for Chelsea would taken them top of the league, while a win for City would move them within a point of Liverpool, with a game in hand. Bottom placed Fulham are desperate for a win at Aston Villa.
