British oil worker shot dead in Brazil carjacking

Peter Campsie, 48, gunned down by two men as he fled his moving vehicle

A BRITISH man has been shot dead in Brazil during a suspected carjacking. Peter Campsie, a 48-year-old operations manager for Diamond Offshore Drilling International, had been returning home from a business meeting when two men tried to steal his Lexus.

Campsie, from Montrose in Scotland, tried to flee the moving vehicle but was shot twice, according to the Aberdeen-based Press and Journal. He is thought to have died at the scene of the attack in Niteroi Municipality.

His family said in a statement: "He was a man who loved life and brought so much joy and laughter to those around him.

"Wherever Pete went, the good times followed. A darkness has fallen on us all as we try and make sense of why Pete had to die in the prime of his life.

"He was a loyal friend and father, brother and son who cared deeply about making sure everyone got the best out of their lives. Our anchor has been pulled away so cruelly."

The shooting comes just two months before the football World Cup kicks off in Brazil. Rio’s Maracana stadium is one of the venues and the Brazilian security forces have raiding the city’s favelas over the past few years in order to tackle gang violence ahead of the expected influx of football fans.
