1. May tells Tories to embrace centre ground
Theresa May will today tell the Conservatives to "embrace a new centre ground... built on the values of fairness and opportunity" as she closes the party conference in Birmingham. The Prime Minister will also promise to help "ordinary" working class people and ensure "the powerful and the privileged no longer ignore the interests of the people".
2. Seven dead as Hurricane Matthew hits Haiti
The most powerful Caribbean hurricane for a decade has made landfall in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, causing at least seven deaths. Hurricane Matthew has brought 145mph winds, heavy rain and storm surges. Cuba has also been hit but is thought to be less affected. The storm is now moving north, towards Florida.
3. Ukip leader James quits after 18 days
Diane James has quit the Ukip leadership after 18 days in charge, saying she enjoyed the support of party members but not her colleagues and it had become clear she did not have "sufficient authority" or backing to make the changes she had promised. She will continue as MEP for South East England.

4. Mike Pence defends Donald Trump in TV debate
The two men vying to be vice president of the US held their only TV debate of the election last night, with Republican Mike Pence on the back foot as he tried to defend the statements of his running mate, Donald Trump. Democrat Tim Kaine brought up Trump's views repeatedly, only to have Pence deny they were ever made.
5. Hong Kong student leader detained in Thailand
The 19-year-old student who led the 2014 pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong has been detained by the Thai authorities in Bangkok airport. Local media say the immigration bureau claims Joshua Wong is a "national security threat". Wong was to deliver a speech on the anniversary of a massacre of Thai students by the military.
6. Yahoo 'scanned customer emails for FBI and NSA'
Yahoo secretly created a piece of software to search millions of customers' emails for information requested by the US intelligence services, two former employees and a third person who knew about the program told Reuters. The decision to help the FBI and NSA is said to have angered some top executives.
7. Runner to complete his 401st marathon
Charity runner Ben Smith is to complete his target of 401 marathons in 401 days, starting his last run at 10am today between Bristol and Portishead. He was forced to take ten days out in June when he developed an umbilical hernia and has been covering an extra 2.5 miles a day to make up for the missing runs.
8. Google debuts its Pixel smartphone
Google has unveiled its new smartphone, a challenge to Apple and Samsung. The internet giant says its Pixel, whic comes in two sizes, has the best camera ever put in a mobile phone and can charge the battery for seven hours' use in 15 minutes. Google also unveiled is the new Daydream View VR headset for Android.
9. Russians outraged at Robbie Williams video
A new music video by former Take That member Robbie Williams has caused outrage in Russian media. Party Like A Russian has been accused of crude stereotyping and traducing President Vladimir Putin. One newspaper said Williams would never work in the country again.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has repeatedly cited his successful business empire as evidence he is qualified to hold the US's top job despite having no prior political experience.
