1. Guatemala volcano erupts, killing at least 25
At least 25 people were killed and hundreds more injured after Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted yesterday. The Central American country’s National Disaster Management Agency said a river of lava had burned through fields and villages near the volcano, 25 miles from capital Guatemala City. Local experts say the eruption of rocks, black smoke and ash is the largest in the country since 1974.
2. No business case for ditching EU, think tank says
There is “no strong business case for immediate significant divergence from the EU’s regulatory regime”, according to a new report by the Open Europe think tank, which in the past has worked closely with Downing Street on European policy. The group says Britain should maintain EU regulations in return for access to the EU’s single market.
3. London Bridge victims remembered a year on
The victims of the London Bridge terror assault in central London were commemorated yesterday on the first anniversary of the attack, in which eight people were killed and 48 injured by three Isis-inspired terrorists. Armed police closed off an area around Southwark Cathedral yesterday as the prime minister, London mayor and others paid tribute.

4. Man arrested after ‘treating plane like nightclub’
A man was arrested and a flight cancelled after police were called to Bristol Airport to deal with “disruptive” passengers who were treating the plane like a “nightclub”. More than 140 people were on board the easyJet flight to Prague when the incident occured on Friday. Police said a 32-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil had been detained for a public order offence.
5. Younger people less proud of being English
Younger English people are less likely to be proud of their nationality, according to a survey by YouGov for the BBC. The poll on national identity found eight out of ten people in England “identify strongly as English”, says the broadcaster. But only 42% of 18- to 24-year-olds are proud to be English, compared with 72% of over-65s.
6. Former sex worker becomes Dame in honours list
A former sex worker has been given an honour in the Queen’s birthday list for her campaign work which helped to legalise prostitution in New Zealand. Dame Catherine Healy founded the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective in 1986 and was present in the country’s parliament when members voted to legalise prostitution in 2003.
7. FBI agent accidentally shoots man on dance floor
Video has emerged on the internet showing an off-duty FBI agent performing a backflip in a US bar – and then accidentally shooting a bystander in the leg. The male agent is seen dancing in front of a crowd in Denver, Colorado, on Saturday. As he performs the stunt, his gun falls from its holster and when he picks up the weapon, a shot is fired into the crowd.
8. Learner drivers now allowed on motorways
A change in the law means learner drivers are now allowed to practise on the motorway – provided they are in a dual-control car. Previously, only drivers who had passed their test could drive on motorways. The AA welcomed the change, saying it had been “perverse” that a new driver could legally venture onto motorways with no experience.
9. Kylie Minogue reunites with Nick Cave for duet
Kylie Minogue has celebrated turning 50 by joining fellow Australian Nick Cave on stage at a London music festival for a duet yesterday. The pair performed Where The Wild Roses Grow at the All Points East event in Victoria Park. They released the dark ballad in 1995, when it reached No. 11 in the UK charts.
