What happened Donald Trump has warned Oman that it could face US military action if it obstructs his attempts to end the war with Iran. The threat came as a 60-day negotiating period agreed between Washington and Tehran expired without a settlement being reached. Oman, which is not involved in the conflict, has traditionally acted as an intermediary between the two countries.
Who said what “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” Trump told Fox News. He also said Iran should “put up the white flag of surrender” while insisting that he was “not in a hurry” to come to an agreement.
As the truce deadline expires and Trump’s “options shrivel”, the US president has begun “lashing out”, said Luke Broadwater in The New York Times. “I think, ultimately, his threats against Oman are just a reflection of his frustration with the situation he’s created, where he has no good options,” said Nate Swanson, director of the Atlantic Council’s Iran Strategy Project. “He’s just reflexively lashing out, and this time Oman got in the crosshairs.”
What next? Iran said discussions involving Oman were continuing. Trump separately acknowledged that Washington had established a direct channel to the leadership of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. He said his overriding objective remained preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Asked whether the US was seeking to extend the interim deal with Iran, Trump answered “no”.
