Restaurants print menus for women with no prices
And other stories from the stranger side of life
Some restaurants in Italy are handing women menus with no prices on the assumption that their male companions are paying the bill. Argentine influencer Agustina Gandolfo told her 875,000 Instagram followers that she was “indignant” when she was given a “blind menu” while out for dinner in Milan with her footballer partner. Managers in many expensive Italian restaurants assume that male diners will be picking up the tab and that only they should see the prices.
Bat wins bird of the year contest
A tiny bat was won an annual bird of the year competition in New Zealand. Pekapeka-tou-roa, also known as the long-tailed bat, was contentiously included in the contest by conservationist group Forest and Bird and went on to win by some 3,000 votes. Some people were unhappy with the mammal’s inclusion, however, with one Twitter user demanding a recount and another likening the bat to Australia’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Asteroid due to pass Earth
An asteroid the size of two football pitches passed Earth just before 6am this morning. Named 2017 TS3, the colossal ball measures up to 720ft (219m) in diameter and was expected to whizz past the planet at a whopping 22,000 mph. Despite the approach, it posed no threat to humanity as it never got much closer than 5.4 miles away, 14 times further than the moon.
