The UK’s Chancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled his debut national spending plan - the biggest “Budget giveaway” since 1992, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). The new Budget mark an end to a decade of austerity that has seen the Tories slashing funding for public services in a bid to balance the books.

In the US, a federal judge ordered that former US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning be released from jail after being held since last May, because testimony she refused to give in an inquiry into WikiLeaks is no longer needed. Manning, who leaked hundreds of thousands of US secret documents to WikiLeaks in 2010, was reported earlier this week to have attempted suicide.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s ban on all flights from the European Schengen area to the US sent shock waves through the airline industry and stock markets.

In Iraq, a British soldier and two Americans were killed in a rocket attack on a military base that was believed to have been carried out by Iranian-backed fighters or Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp.

Lance Corporal Brodie Gillon was the first British serviceperson killed by enemy fire since the UK joined the operation against Islamic State in 2014.
