Sky-rocketing energy bills are set to cause a winter of suffering, but calls for urgent measures to protect poorer households have been dismissed during the bitter Conservative leadership election.

This morning, leadership contender Rishi Sunak attempted to grasp the nettle, challenging his rival Liz Truss to follow suit. But frontrunner Truss gave little sign she was prepared to take further action at the latest party hustings in Cheltenham last night.
