Mourners gathered across Asia on Friday with beachside memorials and religious services to honor those lost in the Indian Ocean tsunami 10 years ago.

The Dec. 6, 2004 tsunami killed about 230,000 people and was "one of modern history's worst natural disasters," The Associated Press notes. The tsunami, triggered by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake, struck roughly a dozen countries, with Indonesia hit the hardest. Relatives of those lost gathered in various countries across the Indian Ocean rim on Friday to mark the anniversary. --Meghan DeMaria
