Netflix is expanding its original-content game with an adaptation of Lemony Snicket's beloved children's book series.

The live-action series is being produced in conjunction with Paramount Television. Paramount was also behind 2004's film adaptation of the series, which starred Jim Carrey. Deadline reports that Netflix is currently looking for a director for the show.

In true Snicket fashion, Lemony Snicket (the pen name of author Daniel Handler, and the series' narrator) told Deadline that Netflix was "risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books." The 13-book series followed orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire and their battles with the evil Count Olaf, their guardian.
