Maura Healey has won the Massachusetts attorney general race, The Associated Press projects, making her the first openly gay state attorney general in the United States.

The Democrat will fill the position vacated by Martha Coakley. Healey is a former assistant attorney general who served for seven years in Coakley's office, and spent time in Europe as a professional basketball player before going to law school.
