The federal government is providing schools with military-grade weaponry — and more in our collection of strange revelations about the nation

The federal program that supplies police departments with surplus military equipment has also been sending high-powered rifles and armored vehicles to public schools. Under the program, school districts have been outfitted with Humvees, M16 rifles, and grenade launchers. A Utah school district spokesman said officials sought the weapons because "it would be irresponsible to send our officers into an active-shooter situation with just a handgun."
