Kaymer made a 15-foot par putt on the last hole for a 1-under 69, defeating Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton by eight strokes. Kaymer is only the seventh player in the U.S. Open's 114 years to lead throughout the tournament. During the final 48 holes of the championship, Kaymer led by at least four shots.
