Sharapova defeated Simona Halep of Romania 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 today to earn her second French Open victory. After winning in 2012, Sharapova finished as runner-up last year before battling through a shoulder injury and two coaching changes. Since then, though, the Russian has gone 19-1 in the clay-court season, and she put the finishing touches on the strong performance with her win today.
While this was her fifth career Grand Slam championship, it is the first time Sharapova has won a major twice, notes The New York Times.

"This is the toughest Grand Slam final I've ever played," Sharapova said afterward. "I can't believe it…it's a dream come true. To think I've won it two times, is, I don't know, I'm so emotional right now I can't even talk."
