President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina was charged Friday with allegedly covering up Iranian involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Clarín reports. Federal prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita brought the charges Friday, resuming the investigation that had been headed by Alberto Nisman, who died Jan. 18 under suspicious circumstances. A warrant for Kirchner's arrest was found in Nisman's apartment last week.
Pollicita wrote that it was time to "begin the necessary investigation with the goal of proving ... the existence of the crime and, if so, if those responsible can be criminally punished." Nisman was apparently planning to accuse Kirchner of obfuscating Iranian involvement in the largest terror attack in Argentina's history in exchange for trade gains.
Pollicita is also bringing charges against Héctor Timerman, Argentina's Minister of Foreign Relations, and other Kirchner associates.
