A Pakistani Taliban splinter group, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, claimed responsibility for the attack, telling AP the bombing was "in response to the recent executions of some of their members by the Pakistani government."

AP notes that Lahore, the provincial capital of the Punjab province, is considered Pakistan's "cultural capital." It is also the power base of Pakistan's prime minister.
