The chief investigator probing last week's fatal derailment of an Amtrak train on Sunday discredited speculation that someone may have fired a gun at the train before it crashed.

"It looks like something about the size of a grapefruit," hit the train's windshield based on a fracture pattern, Robert Sumwalt, of the National Transportation Safety Board, said on CBS' Face the Nation. "And it did not even penetrate the entire windshield."

Also Sunday, in an interview with CNN, Sumwalt said the train's engineer did not report anything striking the train before the accident.

On Tuesday, an Amtrak train traveling 106 miles per hour when approaching a 50 mph zone flew off the rails in Philadelphia, killing eight.
