A teenage North Korean soldier defected to the South on Monday after walking across the demilitarized zone (DMZ), officials say. The soldier approached a South Korean guard post in Hwacheon in the DMZ and is now in custody, the BBC reports. No fire was exchanged. DMZ defections are rare, with the last one happening in 2012; most defectors leave North Korea by crossing into China, then going through southeast Asia before entering South Korea.
